One of the most important– and often times the most stressful– parts of emergency  preparedness is gather the right food and the right amount of it. It's recommended that you have a three-day supply of food for each person in your household. But then there's the question of what type of food? Unfortunately you can't just pack all your favorites and be done with it. Because you don't know when exactly you will need this food, it's important that all the items have long shelf lives so they will stay fresh for when you need them. For that reason, a very popular choice among preppers are MREs or Meals Ready to Eat.

If unfamiliar, you most often find these meals in the military and they usually make up an entire meal and all you need to do is add some water. The convenience of that mixed with the fact that they have very long shelf-life makes MREs a go-to when gather emergency food supplies.

One of my favorite MREs that’s part of all my kits are the standard military MREs. They come in a pack of four, are about 1300 calories to sustain you and have a shelf life of about 3-years. The water-activated heater warms up the  entré and you’re ready to go.

Pros:

As a veteran, I am super familiar with MREs. These will always be my favorite foor for emergencies because I know I can rely on them and they aren’t bad either. Most are very tasty especially the crackers and cheese and peanut butter which are great snacks.

Cons:

These come in random flavors so you can’t pick and choose which you want.

Overall:

These meals are pretty tasty and easy to use. I have them in my go bag and recommend that you do as well.
